Set in America in 1962, “Green Book” is the Oscar-winning film that tells the true story of Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a working-class Italian-American bouncer who takes on a job as a chauffeur and bodyguard for Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a highly-educated African-American classical pianist. The mismatched pair embark on a two-month tour of concert venues in the racially charged Deep South. The film takes its name from a guide book written specifically for African-American motorists, that listed safe places to visit as a person of colour in the U.S., and it doesn’t shy away from the humiliations that Shirley faces as a black man in 1960s America. Tony’s own prejudices quickly become apparent, but time spent with Don proves to be a revelation and they discover they're on the road to a meaningful and unique friendship. In addition to the film winning Best Picture at the Oscars and Golden Globes, Mahershala Ali was awarded Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes and BAFTAs.
