“The Aftermath” is a morally complex film that explores the human consequences of war. In 1946, Hamburg is shattered by the years of hard war and it is the responsibility of the British government to rebuild the ruins, with Colonel Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke) in charge. After a long separation during the war, his wife, Rachael (Kiera Knightley) joins him in Germany while he completes his work and is confronted with an unsettled German population entering a bitter winter. The British officers are to stay in a series of country houses that are reclaimed from the Germans living there, including the house of recent widower Stefan Lubert (Alexander Skarsgård) and his troubled young daughter. Because Stefan and his daughter have nowhere to live, Lewis makes the shocking decision to invite them to stay in the attic of their large home, much to Rachael’s surprise. When Lewis is forced to move away again to execute his orders, Rachael and Stefan find themselves alone in the house in a tense relationship based on enmity and grief. However their unspoken boundaries are slowly broken down and the charged atmosphere gives way to passion and betrayal.
