Joan Stanley (Judi Dench) is a seemingly unremarkable and inconspicuous retiree who is living in a London suburb in 2000 when she is arrested and charged with providing intelligence to Russia during the Cold War. Beneath Joan’s calm exterior there is a dark and shady past that has gone undetected for more than half a century. At Cambridge University, in the 1930s, the young Joan (played by Sophie Cookson) is an unassuming physics student whose life changes when she falls in love with a young communist and gets pulled into the politics of the Soviet Union. When working at a top-secret nuclear research facility during and after WWII, Joan comes to the realisation that the world is on the brink of destruction. She confronts an impossible question – what price would you pay for peace?
The story is adapted from the bestselling novel by Jennie Rooney and inspired by the life of Melita Norwood who became known as the ‘granny spy’ when she was unmasked as a KGB agent in the late 1990s. It is a well-crafted historical thriller bolstered by excellent performances from both Judi Dench and Sophie Cookson.
