Christmas Celebrations

After a very brief General Assembly on 5th December the Vall del Pop U3A members celebrated Christmas with an entertainment packed party, with nibbles and cava to keep us going.

To welcome members to the GA and the party Bill White entertained us on his keyboard to a selection of popular tunes and carols. He was supported for several tunes with ‘His Songsters’, who did their best to get the assembled members into good voice.

The party kicked-off in earnest with Pauline and Friends entertaining us with an excellent performance of folk and country songs, for which they accompanied themselves very professionally on guitar.

The Goodwill Team then invited us to us our brains, in teams of four, to remember displayed articles in a U3A version of the Generation Game – with a masked Bruce Forsyth giving directions and descriptions of the items. With 20 items to remember the team distributed answer sheets, by which time I had forgotten all but two or three. After checking of the answers Pete, Jo, Linda and John won with 19 of the 20 – forgetting only the cullender. A truly phenomenal performance.

Time to rest the brain with Lorraine reciting Christmas Poems, given a local and surprising twist. As Brucy would say “didn’t she do well”, not one slip up throughout the performance.

Then we were treated to a fascinating demonstration of Flamenco dancing from Suzanna Mace and her team – a beautiful demonstration of one of Spain’s highlights.

Before our last entertainment Marie and Teresa arranged for the raffle draw to be made, with many many prizes, and raising euro 500 to re-start the charity fund for 2020, after the donations to six local charities.

The party was brought to its climax by a performance by The Entertainers who, with the aid of Pete their lighting engineer working his 747-style control consul, gave us an atmospheric performance of Forever Autumn before moving onto Christmas songs, with exceptional performances of Little Drummer Boy and Feliz Navidad, to which a small part of the Keep Fit gave a demonstration of their exercises.

The party was brought to a standing conclusion with Jennifer, supported by the Entertainers, closing the show with Auld Lang Syne.
