On 8th May 81 of our u3a members celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE day at our General Assembly. The hall was bedecked with red, white and blue bunting, decorations and flowers, the tables were adorned with red and white plants, fine bone china cups, a table quiz about WW2 and copies of black and white photos from the era.
We went to the beautiful city of Valencia for the day. Leaving a cool and rather damp Jalon at 8 o’clock to travel in a comfortable coach, we had the best part of 6 hours to explore the city as we wished.
On 28th April there was a massive power outage that hit Spain and other European countries. Within 5 seconds 60% of the grid network power collapsed and millions of households were affected. Public transport was at a standstill, internet and mobile phone services were down and emergency services were operating in crisis mode. This was the worst electricity blackout in Spain´s history.
Dear Members,
Our General Assembly this month fell on the 80th anniversary of VE Day and we themed our event accordingly. You will find a full report with pictures later in this newsletter. Our speaker was the always excellent Angela Chantry. She and everyone else involved helped to create a very memorable day, perfectly combining reflection and celebration.
We were delighted to be able to try a new restaurant this month, Bistro Del Hierro, in Jalon. Normally, they do not open for midday service but were happy to organise a party event for the u3a Ladies Lunch.
44 members headed off from Jalon Rastro Car Park at 8.15 on Tuesday 11th March. After some recent miserable weather fingers were crossed for a dry day! After a short coffee break at Crevillentes we arrived in the City of Murcia at 11 o’clock. Beautiful sunshine greeted us!
